In the 50’s, there was the stay at home Mom. Soap Operas became the favorite method to reach these consumers. Proctor and Gamble and other home product marketers made a small fortune selling to these important consumers.
With the 80’s, we saw the rise of the Soccer Mom. She was at every soccer game, football game and dance recital. There is a lot of money to be made marketing lessons, uniforms and equipment to support this busy lifestyle. While Dad my play a role and help coach,Moms remained a key decision maker with the families’ disposable wealth.
Now here were are in the era of social media and guess who again is playing a prominent role. That is right – Moms. I like to refer to these as “Facebook Moms” We have all seen them. They post every picture of little Johnie scoring another basket or Susie hitting another home run.
More importantly for your business, they talk to other parents. They have the ability to drive business to your stores. They share where they are going to eat and what kind of computer they are going to buy. Facebook Mom’s influence does not wane after a few years. As social media continuous to grow so does the Moms’ ability to influence their children’s buying habits. Facebook has allowed Mothers to extend their involvement and influence well into adult hood.
As a business owner, you have to be where your customers are. If you want to have a chance of reaching these consumers, you must be active where they are at. For now, that is Facebook. There are other social networks out there but if you want to reach the decision maker, you have to engage with the “FaceBook Moms”.
